Travel Restrictions Update July 2020

July 1, 2020 By Graham Vale

July sees some changes to travel restrictions in most states so now is a good time for an update. So I have tried to put together the most relevant updates and links for you …Below are some bullet points and links but please refer to the government pages for full information.

For a handy reckoner on border restrictions, the Healthdirect Australia Restriction Checker has advice on what restrictions are in place in each state and territory across Australia.

NSW

  • NSW has not closed its borders. However, NSW Health strongly discourages travel to and from areas of Victoria with COVID-19 outbreaks until control of community transmission has been confirmed.
  • Caravan and camping grounds may open. There is no limit to the number of customers in the park or grounds but there are limits to visitors.
  • If you are visiting a national park camp ground you must book ahead

VIC

  • VIC has not closed its borders. There are no restrictions on leaving or entering Victoria at this time. There is no restriction on the distance you can travel with the state.
  • You can stay at a caravan park or camping ground. Communal facilities including kitchens and bathrooms can open.

QLD

  • From 12 noon 3 July – Queensland’s borders will remain closed to anyone who has been in Victoria within the past 14 days.

  • From 10 July 2020, any person from New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, may enter Queensland subject to completing and signing a border declaration.

  • You can travel anywhere in Queensland, except to Biosecurity Areas or Restricted Areas. There is no limit on distance.

  • There will be a gradual reopening of some areas in some national parks. To find out if your local national park is open and what type of activities you can undertake there, visit www.parks.des.qld.gov.au.
  • Some camping and caravan sites are still not opening shared amenities.

SA

  • SA were planning on lifting restrictions on 20 July but have announced a delay after VIC increase in cases.
  • If you are planning travel to SA, you should complete the Cross Border Travel Registration at least three days before you leave, regardless of where your travel begins. Complete your Cross Border Travel Registration here.
  • Travel within South Australia is largely unrestricted. People are free to visit most regional areas, and travel within South Australia is a great way to support our regional communities and economies. There are some remaining restrictions on travel to remote communities.

WA

  • You cannot enter Western Australia without an exemption. See more info here.
  • Travel is now permitted throughout all regions within WA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities.

TAS

  • If you are not a Tasmanian resident or an Essential Traveller you should not make a new booking from Victoria to Tasmania at this stage.
  • All non-essential travellers arriving in Tasmania will be required to enter quarantine and has currently set a date of Friday 24 July for changes to be made to current border restrictions.
  • Most parks and reserves (including visitor centres and campgrounds) are open, with the 30 kilometre travel limit no longer in place. For more details visit the PWS website.

NT

  • Everyone arriving in the NT from interstate before 17 July must complete 14 days of self-quarantine. If you are in a caravan or motorhome you will still have to quarantine at a hotel in the nearest township, not your RV.
  • From 17 July, border controls will be lifted for most interstate arrivals. You will still need to complete a border arrival form.
  • More on border controls here.
Remote work and travel restrictions are lifting.
There is no longer any requirement to quarantine for 14 days before entering a remote community. Residents can move freely between their communities, homelands, country and town.
  • Non-residents wanting to go into a remote community must still must follow all the requirements of land councils and local communities, including checking if you need a land council permit to go there. This includes for work.

ACT

  • ACT borders are open.

Graham
